Course description

Bioimaging plays an important role in modern biosciences not only as a tool for research but also as a means to improve medical treatments. The main objective of this course is to provide the theoretical basis of bioimaging together with some “hands on” laboratory practice. The goal of the course is to teach the students general principles of fluorescence and light microscopy as well as to demonstrate principles behind advanced fluorescence and imaging techniques as well as a short introduction to image processing and analysis.

There will be practical demonstrations and hands on exercises on all topics. The course is a five-day intensive course taking place within one week. The course is relevant for PhD students within medicine, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, nano-bioscience, pharmaceutical sciences, agricultural science or biology. The course corresponds to 5 ECTS points.

  • Lectures (3 days, 10 lessons)
  • Seminars on application of technique (3 seminars)
  • Hands on practical exercises
  • Individual experimental projects
  • The students prepare a presentation of the results
  • Students presentations

Learning objectives:

A student who has met the objectives of the course will be familiar with:

  • Widefield microscopy
  • Laser scanning single-photon confocal microscopy
  • Two-photon microscopy
  • Super Resolution microscopy
  • Spinning disk confocal microscopy
  • Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS)
  • Raster Image Correlation Spectroscopy (RICS)
  • Fluorescent Lifetime Imaging microscopy
  • Coherent anti Raman scattering microscopy (CARS)
  • Image analysis


The students will conduct their own mini-project on a chosen topic within one the presented techiques and at the examination day give a short presentation of their results. The student will thus be evaluated via oral examination with internal evaluation by the teachers on a pass/fail basis.

Date of exam: The ordinary exam takes place at June 11, 2021

Covid-19 related information

We are sorry to announce this, but with the present situation we cannot run the Biophotonics course this January (18th to 22nd as previously stated).

We think the physical presence and hands-on aspect is a very important part of this course. Due to the high infection levels and recommendations on social distancing we cannot run the course physically here at SDU and the course will therefore be postponed to June, week 23, the 7th - 11th of June.

At the moment, the course is actually filled to 100%, and we are really looking forward to meeting you all. However, we would like you to check if you are still available in June and if you would still like to remain signed up. In case you would like your registration to remain unchanged, please let me know before the 15th of January.
